Dave Wright - Bulking Up

I’ve been training pretty regularly for almost 20 years now and whilst I had
achieved some of my goals I still didn’t look the way I really wanted. I’m a big guy anyway but I originally started working with a Personal Trainer to get bigger.
As time has progressed I have refined my goals and started to realise that the reality of my situation was that I wanted to look bigger rather than get to the point where I could no longer buy clothes!

My personal trainer was, interestingly enough, chosen by my wife. Maz Marrison had trained my wife when she (my wife) was pregnant so when I got some sessions as part of a Christmas present I stuck with Maz to see what difference she could make. I was impressed with what I learned during these sessions and bought some more. I would say I know have around five or six sessions a month.

Originally I thought that this was going to be cost prohibitive but looking at the bigger picture I’m spending about the same money looking after myself each year as I would servicing my car!

Personal training for me has shown me the correct way to isolate how I exercise and taught me the level of intensity I need to work at. The end result of this is that I now get considerably more benefit out my time in the gym than I used to. In the past I have always thought that I was pushing myself hard enough but I found that Maz was pushing me harder and this has had the knock on effect of increasing the intensity when training on my own.

From a results perspective I haven’t really lost any weight – but that wasn’t one of my goalshowever I would say I have dropped body fat. I could change further if I was stricter with my diet, as Maz always reminds me, but I view training and personal training as a way to allow me to livemy life the way I want. I get more out of my time in the gym, I have structure to my routinesand now have correct form when I exercise.

I would say that Personal Training works for people who are just starting out or people who, like me, have been thinking they are doing the right thing for twenty years
